This is Levi. He is a 3 1/2 ish year old, 75 pound Cane Corso/Shar-Pei mix, best we can tell. He is neutered, up to date on shots, micro-chipped, house trained, dog, cat and child friendly.
He was brought into the shelter by a woman who said her boyfriend had plans to kill him because he would not fight. He was severely battered but, despite some physical scars, he is a sweet, loyal dog. He has been with me for over a year. I would keep him if I could but my male Chow mix won't accept him.
His issue is his skin. It is kind of fragile and he cuts easily. He needs a suburban home with a fenced yard and a family that loves dogs enough to feed him the 6 to 7 cups of healthy food and supplements per day that he needs and is willing to accept the inevitable need for a few stitches once in a while. He is active and affectionate and would do best as an only pet or with a dog that is either mellow or won't escalate play level to the point where he gets injured. He wants constant affection.
He is a beautiful creature and deserves a happy life.
This is Ben. He is a 2 1/2 ish year old Doberman/Pointer mix, best we can tell. He is about 75 pounds of muscle and gleaming black fur, neutered and will be up to date on shots. He was at the SPCA since he was a puppy and developed food and object guarding behavior.
He has been through months of intensive training with an excellent behaviorist who specializes in aggression and is much improved. However, he needs a dog savvy owner with experience with this kind of thing. He will probably need to be fed in isolation and denied bones and toys for a long time.
In the absence of resources he is quite sweet. Oddly, he is VERY dog-friendly and walks away from dominance or aggression from other dogs. He needs to be introduced to new people slowly but he has gone from lunging at strangers to approaching them with a wagging tail looking for a pat on the head.
He is a challenge and a long term project but he has known nothing but a cage and a steel grate as a bed for most of his life and deserves a chance. He improves every day but, again, needs an experienced owner with no kids or cats.
This poor guy has been at Associated Humane in Newark since December 22 - a testament to his temperament, having survived at this very high kill shelter for so long.
MCP is awaiting more info but he looks like a middle aged Mastiff mix. The shelter manager says he's a very nice dog but is completely out of time.
